Reliable sources for news from states
What happens in states politically often flows up to the federal level. This includes organizing campaigns, laws, and initiatives. So, it’s important to monitor what all states are doing, yes, all 50 of them, not just your state. Fortunately, there are several websites that do just that. They generally have newsletters that summarize important news from all states. Plus, they provide newsletters and websites for individual states, to give a deeper dive.
News from the States. News from all 50 states.
“News From The States brings expert, on-the-ground reporting from all 50 states together in one place.”
Click “States” in main menu to choose individual states, which you can read or subscribe to. Each state has its own website, which is usually run by an affiliate. They also have newsletters for specific issues like reproductive rights, voting issues, daily states summaries, and trending topics. A hugely valuable resource.
Courier Newsroom. Eleven state affiliates.
“Courier’s local newsrooms provide Americans with news centered on the people and policies affecting their lives. Our reporting is primarily produced for the social media platforms and online channels” Like News from the States, they have separate websites for each state. Decided and welcome “pro-democracy” stance.
Bolts. Local criminal justice and voting rights.
“Bolts covers the nuts and bolts of power and political change, from the local up. We report on the local elections and obscure institutions that shape public policy but are dangerously overlooked in the U.S., and the grassroots movements that are targeting them.
We focus on two areas where local governments play a key role: criminal justice and policing, and voting rights and democracy.”
Route Fifty. Governance and technology
“Making states, counties and cities more efficient is the job of governance and technology. We need to get away from talking about one and not the other. Today’s leaders must be both managers and technologists.”
Primary emphasis is using technology in all its forms in multiple types of governance. You’ll find news here not often available elsewhere.
The Nevada Independent. Nevada politics.
I live in Las Vegas. The Nevada Independent is the go-to site for Nevada politicos. It’s accurate, comprehensive, and indispensable.
“The Nevada Independent is a statewide, reader-supported, digital-only nonprofit newsroom committed to illuminating the state’s most pressing issues, fostering insightful conversations and holding those in power to account. We tell the story of the Silver State and its people in a timely and nuanced way that promotes civic engagement and empowers Nevadans to improve their communities and quality of life.
We do not have a paywall, and all our content is free.”
